An MGA Story

GT-15 in Williamsburg, Virginia was a step back in history. Not only did we enjoy all of the history in this area, but we also were able to bring together a group of old NAMGAR friends for a great photo of Bob and Mary Tennity's 1600 with its new owner, Dan Asbury, who also won 1st place in the 1600 Mk II class. Since Williamsburg is close to the birthplace of NAMGAR, there were many original members in attendance.

After the passing of Bob Tennity, it was a while before Mary sold the cars. The first was the 1600 Mk II. Dan Ashbury (front) was the lucky stiff who purchased it. At the GT, Dan and Steve got everyone who knew Bob from the early days and gathered them around the car. Steve set his camera on a tripod and snapped this picture. Steve ended up having to make ten or fifteen copies: one to Dan, one to Mary Tennity and one to just about everyone else in the picture.

The car was purchased from Mary Tennity in March of 1989.At that time Martina and I lived In West Virginia. Unfortunately I had to wait a year before I was able to make take it to the national meet. In retrospect, I feel fortunate to have attended GT-15. To the best of my knowledge, that was the last time that many of Bob and Mary’s friends attended the same meet. The car was first shown by Bob in 1980 at GT-5 held in Lake Tahoe where it took 1st place. Mary said they drove the car approximately 2500 miles from Rochester NY. Since he had just finished the restoration he had planned on driving his Red 1959 MGA 1500 that was restored in 1977.  However, when they reached Buffalo it started raining and he discovered the wind shield wipers were not working. At that point, he went back to Rochester, called his insurance agent to add the 62 MGA and away they went. Bob’s red MGA appears on the front cover of the book MGA A History & Restoration Guide By Bob Vitrikas.

Click on GT-5 and scroll down. If you look closely you will see a picture of Bob in the background wearing white cap talking to a few interested individuals. Martina and I got to see the car the next year at GT-6 in Harpers Ferry West Virginia where it took Ist in the premier class. As you can tell, Bob’s MGA’s and the memories they helped create with the members goes
back a long way.
