Castles in the air
I recently went to Scotland where I saw several ancient castles in the mist. They made me think about our late friend Denis Anderson when he first told me about being able to drive to a real castle from Houston. At the time I thought of a Rod McKuen poem from my college days about being too cool for sand castles anymore. According to Mr. McKuen, they only exist across the ocean or in a dim memory. That is not exactly true.
On Saturday, September 15, Houston MG Car Club members are invited to meet at Newman’s Bakery, located at 504 E. Main St. in Bellville, by 10:30 am so we can follow the bakery owner, Mike Newman, to his own personal nearby castle. The bakery is a delight as well, so allow some time for a fresh pastry and some morning coffee before our trek to the Texas fantasy world.
Newman fell in love with castles when he went to Europe as a young man and came back with a plan to build his own one day. Now we can take a guided tour of this modern creation and explore its amazing drawbridge, moat and turrets. After our tour, we will enjoy a specially prepared lunch on the grounds. Lunch costs $15.00 per head and needs to be ordered in advance. The tour and lunch will take about two hours.
To get from Houston to Newman’s Bakery to start our visit, you can head west on either I-10 or Hwy 290. Following are directions from Houston according to Google maps. Either route should take about 1 ½ hours on a Saturday morning.
If you take I-10 driving west, take exit 720 toward TX- 36 heading for Sealy/Bellville. Turn left onto TX-36/N Meyer St. then left onto E. Main. The bakery will be on your right.
If you drive Hwy 290, head west from Houston and exit onto FM 1488 toward Hempstead/Magnolia. Take a left onto FM 1488 W then right on Austin St. in Bellville. Turn left onto TX 159 W/13th St. and look for the bakery on your right.
Please email Dave Renner at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 713-301-7620 to order a lunch. Come hungry for adventure and good food. We look forward to seeing you at the castle in your faithful MG.
