Geographic Center of HMGCC Membership

Have you ever wondered where the geographic center of the Houston metro area members would be? We have often discussed central locations for meetings and events, but it has always been guesswork. While pondering this question, I did a search for a program that would address this problem. I found this website which will calculate the exact geographic center, as long as you have the patience to enter every address of the Houston metro area members:

With Nancy’s help entering the addresses and navigating the non-intuitive engineering interface of the program, we found the center of the universe. Well, at least the center of the Houston MG universe. We were able to find the nearest street address as:

5450 Langfield Road, Houston, TX

The latitude and longitude is: (29.832552/-95.496606)

Pulling up Google Maps and plugging in the street address shows a location just south of Hwy 290, approximately half way between Beltway 8 and the 610 Loop.

Zooming in closer shows a number of nearby restaurants and area businesses.

This is something to keep in mind if we are looking for a central meeting location for activities, or events.

Just kidding really. I doubt I would have moved the center of mass by more than a mile or so. If I could do that I might move to Tallahassee or Jacksonville just for giggles.

Well excuuuse meeee for living in Mobile!

    Very cool!

I was surprised Dwight didn’t come up with this! John, I assume “Houston Metro” includes Magnolia and Brookshire.

Yes, we eliminated places like Mobile, Alabama, and Waco, but included all Houston metro area addresses including Magnolia, Pearland, Baytown, Sugar Land, Montgomery, Brookshire, etc. It was a tedious process, but it was interesting to see the result.

  5. Very informative. I’m sure glad you didn’t mention that our house is just a couple of miles from there! Of course, 290 is a DANGER ZONE until it is finished, maybe next year.
