On Saturday the Houston MG Car Club held a safety inspection thanks to the generosity of Ron Redding.  Although only six cars made it out to 5R Restorations, the day was a success for those who were there.  Ron, with assistance of Mike Woodward completed a thorough stationary review of the cars checking, lights, brakes, horn, windshield wipers, suspension components and steering and a variety of other safety related items.

I think we were all a bit surprised what was found.  All the cars at the session are well maintained and driven frequently by their owners who are knowledgeable and capable of doing the needed maintenance work.  That said, we found brake lights that were not working, broken suspension strap, dry-rotted bushings and missing or damaged parts of various kinds.  Kind of makes you wonder what may be found on other cars in the club.

After completing the inspections we headed down to Fulshear to Dozier's BBQ to swap stories and a bit of all-in-fun ribbing of one another over what we found wrong with our cars.

Our cars all lined up outside, while we were inside enjoying delicious food and great friendships!

The maintenance of our cars is critical to assuring that we can safely drive them. Having a qualified expert inspect the car is an important part of regular maintenance.  For those of you who were unable to make it this time, please do not miss the next one.  It is one of the great benefits of being a member of the Houston MG Car Club.

    Remember always be Safety Fast!

A great big THANK YOU to Ron Redding for hosting the safety inspections at his shop - 5R Restoration

This Saturday’s weather was incredible, was it not? Maybe the best driving day of the year. So, reminiscence of our high school years, we played hooky from the Club’s monthly meeting and put the car to use doing what it was designed to do – a country drive. But this time it was a drive with a purpose.  We went over to Moravia Texas to attend the Songwriter Serenade.

The Texas Songwriter Serenade is an annual competition, held the first Saturday in May, with singer songwriters from across the country competing for the top prize. It is held in Parish Hall, a very Texas style dance hall. The judges are all renown songwriters in their own right and the performers were outstanding. They weren’t just local talent, but were 15 of our country’s best, selected from over 170 entries. This year’s contestants were from Colorado, Ohio, Nashville, New York, Georgia, Boston, Utah, California as well as Texas.

The music was simply the songwriter and his or her guitar. No background musicians, no fancy electronics, just a person standing on the stage putting their talent on display in the rawest form. The lyrics covered topics ranging from love found to love lost, fast cars and old trucks, small towns and big cities, our country’s history to concerns of what the future holds and the Lord’s forgiveness and our salvation.

It was an afternoon of pure entertainment and the ticket price was just $15.00. They had food and beer for sale at the venue and the people couldn’t have been more friendly. Moravia is a short hour and 15 minute drive from Katy via I-10. If you want a little more enjoyable drive you can get there on country roads in under 2 hours. I see next May’s Club meeting possibly being a field trip.

Today on my MSN news-feed the following photo of Prince William and Princess Kate popped up.  Could their chariot be an MGB?  Nope, it is an Aston Martin.

Click on the photo to be taken to the full story.

(Warning it is a story about their romance, not about MG cars)

Did you know that May 4th was Drive Your MGA Day.  The NAMGAR has declared that this is the day that all of us who own MGA’s should have them out on the road.  It just so happens that the Houston MG Car Club meeting is the same day at Lyndon’s BBQ, starting at 11:00am.

Looking forward to seeing all Houston local MGA owners there with your cars!
